Stop Guessing,
Start Measuring

What to Expect

High fertilizer prices and tight margins make every soil test decision matter. Our research shows that even small sampling errors can lead to large fertilizer expenses. A potassium test that misses the actual value by 20 ppm could drive about $90/A in unnecessary fertilizer, while a 5 ppm error in phosphorus could add roughly $105/A. Building large nutrient reserves as insurance is not the answer either. Banking an extra 15 ppm of phosphorus and 50 ppm of potassium could tie up about $380/A without adding yield.

The way a field is sampled can be just as important as the recommendation that follows. In a high-density study covering 4 fields, 160 acres and more than 2,500 samples, denser grids consistently reduced the amount of soil test error*. Zone sampling also outperformed a traditional 2.5-acre grid in every field and nutrient evaluated, even when both approaches sent the same number of samples to the lab. A 2.5-acre zone reduced fertilizer-value error by $32/A compared with a 2.5-acre grid, while a 1-acre grid reduced it by $57/A. Quarter-acre sampling reduced the error by $152/A.

The takeaway is simple: spend a little more on measuring so you can spend less on guessing. Use soil type, drainage, slope, organic matter, topsoil depth and multiple years of yield data to take samples where field conditions actually change. Sample more densely when taking on a new field or investigating a stubborn low-yield area, and let nutrient levels draw down when they are already above the range needed for yield. Radicle Agronomics connects sampling, trusted soil data and prescription creation to help farmers reduce over-application, protect deficient areas and make more confident fertility decisions on every acre.

*Error here is calculated in $/A using the cost of fertilizer it takes to change a soil test value by 1 ppm.
